Civic Service

Today was Jessica’s civic service, which is essentially a church service designed for the new Mayor to have her or his work blessed by the church. It harks back to a time when religion played more of a role in civic life than it does today (although it is still more of an active part than you might think). Its also an occasion to dress up and celebrate a great achievement with friends and family.

Holy Trinity Church

We were chauffeured to the church (Holy Trinity, Pontnewydd) and were escorted to our seats by the church wardens, where we engaged in many hymns and the usual prayers of exultation to god. I then gave the following reading from the book of kings:

“The king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there, for it was the greatest and highest place in the kingdom, and there he offered a thousand burnt offerings on that altar to god.

While he was in Gibeon, the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream, and said unto the king, “Ask what you want from me.”

King Solomon answered god by saying, My Lord you have shown great mercy to your servant, David my father, for he walked before you in faithfulness, righteousness, and with uprightness of heart toward You. And You have shown him great kindness in giving him a son to sit on his throne now this day.

Now, O Lord, my God, You have made, me, your servant a king in place of my father David, yet I am still a child, and do not yet know how to go out or come in. And I your servant am in the midst of your people, whom you have chosen. A great people. A people so numerous that they cannot be numbered or counted.

So My Lord God give unto me your servant an understanding heart to judge your people, that I may discern between good and evil, for who else is able to judge among so great a people?”

And It pleased the Lord that Solomon had asked for such a thing. God said unto him, “Because you have asked this and have not asked for such things as long life or riches or for me to take the lives of your enemies, but you have asked for yourself wisdom so that you may have discernment in your judgement,

I now do according to your words. I have given you a wise and an understanding heart, so that there has never been any like you in the past, and that there shall never come another like you.

And I have also given you that which you have not asked, both riches and honour, so that no kings will compare to you all of your days. And If you will walk in my ways, keeping my statutes and my commandments as your father did, then I will lengthen your days.”

Solomon awoke and found it was a dream. But when he came to Jerusalem and stood before the ark of the covenant of our Lord. And there he offered up burnt offerings and offerings of peace and fellowship. he made a great banquet for all of his court, friends and followers and did so in the name of the lord.”

After I gave my reading it was followed by another reading from our local Member of Parliament and then a reading by Her Worship The Mayor, then we were treated to a performance by the Pontnewydd Ladies Choir before The Reverend Harald Thomas gave the sermon, there were a few more hymns, the collection plate went around and the national anthems were sung, Thus ending the service.

Mount Pleasant Hall

We were then bundled back into the car and driven to the reception and break neck speeds, so that Jessica, myself and the Mini Mayoress could greet everybody as they arrived at Mount Pleasant Hall, where the staff and the caterers had done a fantastic job decorating the place to make it, in Marianna’s words, Mum’s special day.DE3ooUOXgAAtsJS.jpg

We were subjected to a lot of photo’s and a lot of small talk, but it really was a wonderful day, marred only by the fact that I didn’t get to take home our tables centrepiece bouquet.

Congratulations Mr Trump (3).png

I’m going to be thirty in just over 2 years and at this moment in time I’m OK with that (how I feel about it in 10 minuets is up for debate) but one of the things that I realised is that there are a fair few things I still want to accomplish whilst the career and social goals are somewhat out of my control things like films I want to see, albums I want to listen to and books I want to read are very much in my control, especially as I have 25 months to accomplish it. Here is a list of the Comics and Graphic Novels that I would like to have read by the time I’m thirty.

Lifting The Veil On Politics: The USA

Lifting The Veil On Politics- Wales (1).png

This is the second of a series of posts trying to de-mystify politics for everyday people.

No matter where you are in the world you undoubtedly hear a lot about American politics. You cant turn on a screen without seeing President Trumps tangerine visage plastered in front of the press, with quotes snapped right from his twitter feed running around the blogosphere for years to come.

But what do you actually know about the system that put Trump in the top office?

The federal government of the United States is split into 3 branches, The Judicial Branch (The Supreme Court and the Lower Courts), The Legislative Branch (which is split into the United States Senate, which has two senators from each state, and The United States House Of Representatives which has 435 members from congressional districts, these two institutions are collectively known as the United State’s Congress). And thirdly the Executive Branch (the offices of the President and The Vice President of The United States).

The reason for the separation of powers between the three branches of government, was to create a series of checks and balances, so that no one branch of government could become more powerful than the other. For example the President can veto a bill from congress, the congress can vote down legislation introduced by the president, or the courts, when petitioned, can decided that legislation is unlawful or not in the spirit of the law.

The federal government is based upon the written constitution of the United States, which sets out the way the government should be run, the power of state legislatures, as well as the rights bestowed upon citizens of the country.  There are currently 27 amendments to the constitution, the first 10 of which make up the bill of rights, and the others deal with issues such as suffrage, presidential term limits and successions, congressional salaries, and the prohibition/ reinstating of alcohol.

State Legislatures

American law can get a little confusing to outsiders, because there are different laws for different states so you actually have 51 different sets of laws for one country. But its actually no different from the way the UK is set, federal government in Washington devolves law making responsibility to local state legislatures, the same way that the UK government devolves law making powers to the Scottish Parliament and the National Assembly for Wales. These state legislatures will make laws on many things such as education policy, traffic laws and even controversial things such as gun regulation, gay marriage and drug decriminalisation.

The state governments are governed in much the same way as the federal government, The governor of the state will be held accountable by the state senate and both can be held accountable by district courts and the supreme court.

Hopefully that helps shed some light on the way that laws are made across the pond.

Desert Island Discs (Christmas Special)

Desert Island Discs (1).png

Desert Island Disc’s is a long running radio broadcast (currently broadcast on BBC Radio 4) where, in the BBC’s own words, “a guest is invited to choose the eight records they would take with them to a desert island”, guests are also permitted one book and one luxury item. However today I’ll be putting a Christmassy spin on the BBC classic and will be selecting festive themes for if I were to become a Christmas castaway.

The One Book

51nwzhwkqjl-_sy344_bo1204203200_

The Father Christmas Letters by J.R.R Tolkien are stories told in the format of a series of letters, told either from the point of view of Father Christmas or his elvish secretary. They documented the adventures and misadventures of Father Christmas and his helpers, including the North Polar Bear and his two sidekick cubs, Paksu and Valkotukka. The stories include descriptions of the massive fireworks that create the northern lights and how Polar Bear manages to get into trouble on more than one occasion.

The One Luxury Item

remy-martin-vsop

Remy Martin VSPO, It wouldn’t be Christmas without it. My gout may scream the following day, but it would probably make being stuck on an island a little more bearable.

The Eight Songs

Slade-Merry Xmas Everybody

Michael Bublé- Its Beginning To Look A lot Like Christmas

Band Aid-Do They Know It’s Christmas

Frank Sinatra- Have Your Self A Merry Little Christmas

Tom Jones and Cerys Matthews- Baby It’s Cold Outside

Dean Martin – White Christmas

The Pogues- Fairy Tale Of New York

Nat King Cole- Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire (The Christmas Song)

So would you spend Christmas with me on a dessert island, if you had to listen to my playlist? Or does my choice in music make that trip to the inlaws seem a little bit more bearable?

Merry Christmas.

My Relationship With God

My Relationship With God.png

Today I had a pamphlet come through the door, proclaiming god is the answer. Not that god holds the answers, but god is the answer. It got me thinking if god is the answer, what is the question? And then I began thinking about my beliefs in god, an afterlife, in life the universe and everything.

I’m not really sure what I believe and this worries me little, especially lately, a short while ago I lost one of my younger siblings, and it has made me begin to think about the whole life and death thing, I’ve never really been one for questioning my mortality, but I guess having to think of what comes after I suppose its only natural.

I cant say that I really believe in god, a church school sort of beats that out of you, I like the study of religion, but have never found anything that really resonates with my train of thought. I mean Christianity just seems to set up god as a dictator who forsakes those who question him or exhibits free will or thought. Lucifer was banished from the kingdom of heaven for questioning gods rule. Adam and Eve were cast out of Eden for daring to eat from the tree of knowledge. It also sets up God as insecure, in the Binding of Isaac, God asks Abraham to prove his devotion, but being omniscient surely God should have known that Abraham was loyal.

It isn’t just Christianity though, the Hindu religion claims that the universe will last for four days only, surely it would make more sense to last a week. I think the main thing that doesn’t sell me on religion is the way that people use it as a crutch, as a reason not to think for themselves, as a way to shut themselves off from new experiences and as a means of justifying hatred and closed mindedness. As far back as the Spanish Inquisition people have been using religious differences as a fuel for hatred and for unjustifiable acts of horror, from Isis and Al Qaeda to the Ku Klux Klan, this is one of the main reasons why I could never call myself a religious person. Because I can appreciate the teachings of various religious texts, I just think that the whole institution has been corrupted by those that claim to serve it.
